The Austrian baritone has been honored in October 2016 for his artistic achievements by »opera+«- in particular for his outstanding performances as Hamlet (Nationaltheatre Ostrava). His Hamlet was the reason why he won - as the first Austrian opera-singer - the Czech Thalia Award. This prize had been given on March 25, 2017 - as the committee called it - to the »best opera singer of the year«.
Only recently the jury of critics’ of the Prague festival OPERA 2017 selected Weinhappel among all the artists of 18 productions of the festival and awarded him the »Libuska for the extraordinary interpretation of the role« of Hamlet. The »Libuska« is the second most important Czech opera award after the Thalia Award.

He is not only engaged in his favourite subject opera, but also in the genres operetta, musical and song. His musical talent was discovered rather early. When he was eight years old, he had his first singing lessons with the Wiener Sängerknaben (Vienna Boys' Choir) and went on tour as their alto soloist in the USA, South America, Canada, Germany, England and Sweden.

Weinhappel attended the university of music and performing arts Vienna and graduated with honors, he obtained the degree Master of Arts. Among his master's classes professors and singing lessons instructors were personalities such as Eva Blahova, Barbara Bonney, Walter Berry or Gundula Janowitz. Thomas Weinhappel won several international singing contests.

In Michael Haneke's award-winning film »The Piano Teacher« Thomas Weinhappel sang songs from Schubert's »Winterreise«; the film was awarded in Cannes with three golden palm trees. Since that time his special interest applies to lied. His wide repertoire includes the great cycles of Schubert and contemporary composers songs.

His concert work includes, inter alia, following performances: Wiener Konzerthaus, Walt Disney Hall (Los Angeles), Esplanade Concert Hall (Singapore), Symphony Center (Chicago), National Arts Centre (Ottawa), Carinthian Summer Moscow (Kremlin) and St. Petersburg as well as Japan, USA, Australia, Venezuela, Germany, Hungary, Switzerland and Turkey. Furthermore, recitals took him to London, accompanied by Roger Vignoles.

After his debut at the »Bregenzer Festspiele 2016« and in »Madame Pompadour« (21.1.2017) he performed Tarquinius in Britten's  »The rape of Lucretia« (16.2.2017) in the National Opera Houses of Prague and Ostrava (CZ). In 2018 he'll sing Hamlet at the National Opera House of Pilsen.
